Could Atlanta United be looking south – yet again – to fill the Darlington Nagbe-sized hole in their midfield?

The Five Stripes are interested in 22-year-old center mid Mathias Villasanti, according to Paraguayan journalist Juanma Figueredo, who adds that transfer talks with his club Cerro Porteño are “on track.”

A rising Paraguay international, Villasanti typically plays a defensive-minded or box-to-box role. After loan stints with Argentine club CA Temperley and Paraguay’s Sportivo Luqueno, he blossomed in 2019 for Cerro Porteño, earning a starting role as El Ciclon finished second, then third in their league campaigns and won their Copa Libertadores group. A post from Dirty South Soccer provides video clips and a further overview of the player.

ATLUTD’s engine room is in a state of evolution under coach Frank de Boer this winter. After trading Nagbe to Columbus Crew SC, the club secured a permanent transfer for 2019 loanee Emerson Hyndman from Bournemouth and re-signed veteran Jeff Larentowicz; Eric Remedi and Mo Adams are also leading options in defensive midfield.
