The Montreal Impact have signed midfielder Samuel Piette to a new three-year contract with a club option for 2023, the club announced Wednesday morning.

Piette, 25, has been with Montreal since 2017 and has made 70 appearances after joining from Spanish club CD Izarra. The defensive midfielder has logged four assists across that span, and helped the Impact win the 2019 Canadian Championship, resulting in a 2020 Concacaf Champions League spot. They're set to play Costa Rican side Saprissa in the Round of 16

“We are very happy, as he is, to have found an agreement that shows mutual respect, as there was interest from both sides to reach this conclusion,” said Montreal sporting director Olivier Renard in a team release. “We wanted Samuel to stay with the club and I want to thank him to have trust in our project. He will be able to continue his contribution on and off the field.”

Since coming to Montreal, Piette has already played under three different managers: Mauro Biello, Remi Garde and Wilmer Cabrera. That figure will grow to four, with French all-time great Thierry Henry at the helm for 2020. Piette has already come out in support of the move, calling it the "biggest marketing announcement" Montreal could have made.

Piette is originally from Quebec City and has represented the Canadian national team with four assists through 46 games. He has featured in the last four Concacaf Gold Cup tournaments, while also appearing in several 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
