Canada Soccer unveils 2020 Canadian Championship schedule and format

Montreal Impact - celebrate - Canadian Championship

Canada Soccer revealed the format and schedule for the 2020 Canadian Championship, the country's domestic cup competition, on Wednesday.

12 teams from four leagues will be involved in the competition, including the three Canadian MLS teams.

The initial qualifying round will take place from June 16-25, as teams from the Canadian Premier League, the Premier Ligue du Quebec and League1 Ontario will clash for spots in the quarterfinals. That round will kick off July 7-16, with the Montreal Impact, Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Canadian Premier League's Cavalry FC, who went on the deepest run in the 2019 Canadian Championship, playing the winners of the qualifying round.

With a fixed bracket and the overall competition retaining a home-and-away format, the semifinals are scheduled for Aug. 12-19, and the final on Sept. 16-23.

The Impact are the defending champion of the Canadian Championship, and the three current MLS teams have been the only sides to ever win the competition to date, Toronto FC holding the most titles with seven. The winner of the 2020 edition will get Canada's spot in the 2021 Concacaf Champions League tournament.
