Four years ago today: The Double Post, between Sporting KC and Portland Timbers

Double Post -- THUMB

Four years ago today, "Double Post' became a descriptor synonymous with one play.

After 120 minutes of a tense, back-and-forth Knockout Round game of the 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs, the Portland Timbers and Sporting Kansas City would have to settle the clash with penalties:

The shootout, like the game, was back and forth until Alvas Powell failed to convert his spot kick in the ninth round of penalties. Up stepped Saad Abdul-Salaam, knowing a conversion would see SKC through to the next round. Abdul-Salaam sent goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey the wrong way and his shot seemed destined for the bottom corner.

But the ball crashed off the inside of the left post and careened across the goal line, only to be denied a second time by the right post. A few rounds later, goalkeeper Jon Kempin would fail to score his kick, giving Portland the win.

The Timbers would go on to win 2015 MLS Cup.
