Canada 2, United States 0 | 2019 Concacaf Nations League Match Recap

Alphonso Davies popped up at the back post to guide Scott Arfield's cross over the goal line in the 63rd minute, Lucas Cavallini added late insurance and the Canada national team completed an historic 2-0 victory over the US national team on Tuesday night at BMO Field.

The victory, Canada's first over their southern neighbors since 1985, puts coach John Herdman's side atop the Concacaf Nations League A, Group A standings by a six-point margin over the US, who have a game in hand. A tie next month when these teams meet again in Orlando would be enough to send Canada through to the competition semifinals.

Canada were deserved winners over the US and coach Gregg Berhalter, who removed 21-year-old Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic in the 60th minute, just before going behind.

Jonathan David could've punished the US earlier when he failed to convert a bad giveaway on 15 minutes, and Zack Steffen denied Junior Hoilett a second in the 72nd minute before Cavallini wrapped all three points up in second-half stoppage time.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: Put simply, this may be the result that lifts Canada into the top six places in Concacaf in the FIFA World Rankings, and thus the hexagonal round of World Cup Qualifying next year. Meanwhile, the US have lost for the fourth time to a team from the Concacaf region this calendar year, after two earlier defeats to Mexico and one to Jamaica.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Davies beat DeAndre Yedlin to the back post to reach Scott Arfield's cross, and although Zack Steffen reacted excellently just to get a piece of Davies' effort, he couldn't keep it from crossing the goal line.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Alphonso Davies. On a night when fellow European stars like Canada's Jonathan David and the US's Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie all struggled to make an impression, Davies was the class of the evening by a fair distance. Deployed centrally, he would've still secured the honor even if he didn't find the match-winner.
