New York City FC can clinch first place in the Eastern Conference with a win against Atlanta United, who need a victory to stay in the hunt for the top spot when the juggernauts square off Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium. NYCFC would also need the Philadelphia Union to lose or draw the San Jose Earthquakes later Wednesday.
NYCFC (16-5-10) have a four-point lead atop the East with three games remaining after a 1-1 draw at FC Dallas extended an unbeaten streak to eight games. Taty Castellanos put the visitors in front inside the opening minute, but NYCFC were punished for not adding an insurance goal in a dominant opening 25 minutes. FC Dallas leveled in the 66th minute when Zdenek Ondrasek scored after Paxton Pomykal forced Alex Ring into a turnover.
Atlanta United (17-11-3) are coming off a 3-1 home win over the San Jose Earthquakes Saturday, but lost star forward Josef Martinez to a knee injury. Emerson Hyndman and Pity Martinez struck late to break a 1-1 draw after an own goal by Brad Guzan canceled out Justin Meram's opening goal in the 4th minute.
This is the second meeting between the clubs with the Five Stripes winning 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium Aug. 11. Josef Martinez struck for a brace before Heber pulled NYCFC back a goal in the 81st minute.
