Sporting KC sign Felipe Hernandez to Homegrown player deal

TRANSFER TRACKER: Signing

Some history was made Friday, as Sporting Kansas City signed their first-ever Homegrown player who has progressed from an academy affiliate, to SKC’s academy, to the USL Championship’s Swope Park Rangers and then the senior team.

That was the case when Felipe Hernandez put pen to paper, becoming SKC’s 12th Homegrown player in club history. He’s set to officially join the Western Conference club’s roster on Sept. 2, with a contract that's through 2020 and has options for 2021 and 2022.

Hernandez, 21, is in his third season with Swope Park, where he has 13 goals and a club-record 10 assists across 79 matches. Originally from Colombia, Hernandez grew up in Nashville, Tenn., before joining academy affiliate Sporting Nashville Heroes. Hernandez, a former US youth international, moved to SKC’s residential academy in the summer of 2014. He signed with Swope Park Rangers in August 2016, developing into an MLS player.

SKC have signed one other Homegrown Player this year, midfielder Cameron Duke.
