The Houston Dynamo further bolstered their roster on Deadline Day, acquiring midfielder Niko Hansen from the Columbus Crew in exchange for $75,000 in Targeted Allocation Money at the close of the Secondary Transfer Window.

Hansen, 24, had fallen out of favor in Columbus with Caleb Porter as head coach after Gregg Berhalter left to coach the US men’s national team. He’s made just nine appearances (two starts) this year, though has 45 for his MLS career, totaling four goals and five assists.

Primarily a wide player, Hansen is a product of the University of New Mexico and was picked No. 9 overall in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. The Danish-American also featured in two playoff matches for the Crew.

The move comes as Houston’s season has taken a turn for the worse, as the club has gone 2-9-1 since late May. That’s coincided with dropping out of the Western Conference playoff picture, though Wilmer Cabrera’s group has 11 matches left to climb above the playoff line.

Hansen joins a Dynamo side who have largely featured Alberth Elis, Memo Rodriguez and Romell Quioto out wide. Elis, in particular, has been the subject of previous transfer speculation out of MLS.
