Player of the Matchday

Philadelphia Union's Alejandro Bedoya voted MLS Player of the Week

The Philadelphia Union needed a win, and in a great team effort, Alejandro Bedoya kickstarted the proceedings on Sunday against D.C. United.

As a result of his exploits, including the opening goal in a 5-1 win, Bedoya was voted MLS Player of the Week for Week 22 of the 2019 MLS regular season.

With the Union coming off a rough road loss last week, they came to Audi Field needing a boost to get back to first place in the Eastern Conference, where they've been for much of the season. Just three minutes in, a Union rush downfield culminated in Marco Fabian's feed to Bedoya, who stroked home the shot from distance.

Bedoya now has three goals and three assists in 25 regular-season appearances this year, all starts. The 32-year-old is nearing 100 league appearances in his MLS career after playing professionally in Sweden, Scotland and France.

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season through both media and fan voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprises 75 percent of the vote, while a Twitter fan vote represents the remaining 25 percent of voting. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
