MLS 2 (3), Chivas U20s 2 (0) | 2019 MLS Homegrown Game Recap

San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski made two penalty tiebreak saves, Toronto FC midfielder Noble Okello leveled in second-half stoppage time, and the MLS Homegrown Team triumphed on penalties Tuesday following a 2-2 draw with the Chivas de Guadelajara U-20s in the 2019 MLS Homegrown Game presented by Energizer.

Colorado Rapids midfielder Cole Bassett converted the final penalty, as the MLS Homegrowns won the tiebreak 3-0 to take their first victory in the game since it was first contested in 2014.

Okello's leveler came 24 minutes after Sebastian Martinez gave Chivas their second lead of the contest, somewhat against the run of play, following an unlucky deflection off Houston Dynamo defender Erik McCue.

Earlier, the New York Red Bulls' Omir Fernandez scored in just the second minute to cancel out Irving Martinez's first-minute opener.

Three Things

  • BIG PICTURE: The MLS Homegrown Team is now 1-1 in penalty kick tiebreaks after previously losing one to Club America back in the 2015 game, 5-4. Meanwhile, the Chivas U-20 side is proving to be an attractive opponent for this annual competition. They've now tied the Homegrowns 2-2 in both their appearances in the even, the two highest scoring games in its history.
  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH: Despite leading in shots and edging possess, the Homegrowns looked to be heading to a disappointing defeat until Okello popped up in the right spot in what was the final scheduled minute of second-half stoppage time.
  • MAN OF THE MATCH: JT Marcinkowski. After starting five games for the Quakes toward the end of the 2018 season, he has yet to see the field in MLS action in 2019. Might be hard to poke his way into Matias Almeyda's XI the way his team is currently playing, but always good to give the manager something to think about, which he surely did with his heroics.
