In a rematch of a 2015-16 Concacaf Champions League quarterfinal clash – Tigres UANL won, 3-1, on aggregate – Real Salt Lake host the reigning Liga MX champions in the inaugural Leagues Cup quarterfinals Wednesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium.

With a 7-2-1 mark at the RioT this season, Real Salt Lake are coming off a 1-1 draw against Minnesota United FC in Sandy this past Saturday. After Darwin Quintero broke the scoreless stalemate in the 57th minute, Marcelo Silva leveled 13 minutes later off a cross by Jefferson Savarino, helping RSL remain just above the playoff line in the Western Conference.

Tigres UANL have become the most successful team in Liga MX in recent times and the team to beat in Leagues Cup. However, they still have one pending account: winning international competitions. The Monterrey-based team reached the final of Copa Libertadores once and Concacaf Champions League on three occasions in the last four years, coming up empty-handed every single time.

After falling to Club America in a penalty shootout to decide the Campeon de Campeones, Tigres opened their Apertura season with a 4-2 win over Monarcas Morelia last Saturday. Javier Aquino stuck for a brace and Luis Alfonso Rodriguez and Rafael Carloca struck eight minutes apart midway through the first half.
