Columbus Crew SC futility reaching historic proportions

The Columbus Crew’s futility is reaching historic levels.

A 1-0 loss to Orlando City SC at Exploria Stadium Saturday night was their fifth consecutive defeat and eighth straight game without a win. They are also 1-13-1 in their last 15 games, the only victory a 3-1 win over the LA Galaxy May 8.

They are the third MLS team in league history to lose 13 games in a 15-game stretch, joining last year’s Orlando City SC squad and the 2001 Tampa Bay Mutiny.

Remarkably, Crew SC actually started well, with a 4-1-1 mark in their first six as it appeared the transition from Gregg Berhalter to Caleb Porter as head coach was a seamless one.

There’s been a spate of injuries along the way, including season-ending ones to Milton Valenzuela and Federico Higuain. Even on Saturday, Gaston Sauro left the match with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

On Saturday, Crew SC were punished for not being clinical enough in the attacking third and failing to track Orlando City SC’s Benji Michel, who split a pair of defenders to score the lone goal.

Is there a light at the end of the tunnel? Crew SC head to Chicago to take on the Fire Wednesday before returning home to meet the Montreal Impact next Saturday.
