San Jose Earthquakes 1, Real Salt Lake 0 | 2019 MLS Match Recap

Forward Danny Hoesen came off the substitute’s bench to score the stoppage-time winner that lifted the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake in Week 18 action at Ayava Stadium.

Hoesen, who came on in the 75th minute, latched on to a Paul Marie cross following a short corner kick. He clipped his shot from just outside the six-yard box into the net to secure all three points for the Quakes in a battle of clubs hovering around the playoff line in the West.

Before the goal, both teams poked and prodded, but to no avail.

Visiting RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando, playing in career game No. 500, was not as occupied as his Quakes counterpart Daniel Vega, who made five saves on the night, including a spectacular backtracking stop to prevent an own goal in the 48th minute.

And just when it looked like the teams would share the points, Hoesen provided the late heroics.

Three Things

  • THE BIG PICTURE: San Jose head coach Matias Almeyda pushed all the right buttons with his substitutes as Hoesen and Marie both contributed to the stoppage-time winner that put the Quakes back above the playoff line in the West. Seconds from a third consecutive clean sheet, RSL instead conceded late and are below the playoff line at night’s end.

  • MOMENT OF THE MATCH
: The Quakes are inventive with every set piece, so its almost fitting the game’s lone goal comes off a short corner from Cristian Espinoza to Marie to Hoesen.

  • MAN OF THE MATCH: Vega had a big impact on the game with five saves, but Hoesen is the reason the Quakes picked up all three points instead of just one.
