Brian Fernandez's hot start continues as Timbers star makes history

Despite the burden of a club-record transfer fee, despite his time in Liga MX ending with a suspension, despite coming to a new country, city and locker room, Brian Fernandez has been incredible in his first games for the Portland Timbers.

Now, he owns a piece of MLS history.

The 24-year-old lashed the ball home at the close of the first half in the Timbers' Western Conference showdown on Sunday night, extending his scoring streak to five consecutive league games. In case you weren't keeping track, those have been his first five league games with the Timbers, meaning he now stands alone with the longest scoring streak by a player to start his MLS career. (Fernandez, along with a number of other Portland first-teamers, was not named to the squad that played Montreal on Wednesday.)

That's not even counting his excellence in the U.S. Open Cup, where he has also scored in both of the Timbers' games so far as they've advanced to the quarterfinals of that competition. And with a nationally-televised game against NYCFC on July 7 followed by that Open Cup quarterfinal — against league-leading LAFC, no less — he'll have plenty more chances to make his presence felt on the big stage.
