The first Gold Cup match played in Costa Rica will pit Haiti against Concacaf Gold Cup debutants Bermuda in the opening match of a Group B doubleheader Sunday at Estadio Nacional.
Haiti, who twice reached Gold Cup quarterfinals (in 2002 and 2009) are making their seventh appearance in the competition and first since 2015.
Haiti booked a berth in the Gold Cup by finishing first in the Concacaf Nations League qualification, winning all four matches with a +17 goal differential.
Les Grenadiers played three Gold Cup tune-up matches, falling to El Salvador and Chile before defeating Guyana 3-1 in Costa Rica. Meckack Jerome and Wilde-Donald Guerrier put Haiti in front, 2-0 before the half-hour mark and Jonel Desire added a third goal just past the hour mark before Keanu Marsh-Brown pulled Guyana a goal back in the 90th minute.
Bermuda lost their first CNL qualifier, falling to Aruba 3-1, but rallied for a lopsided win over St. Maarten, a 1-0 win over El Salvador in Hamilton and then rallied from an early deficit to win 3-1 at the Dominican Republic on the fourth and final matchday to finish fifth and clinch their first-ever Gold Cup berth.
The Gombey Warriors followed that impressive performance up with a 1-0 victory over fellow Gold Cup participants Guyana in an international friendly at Bermuda National Stadium. Donte Brangman scored the 37th-minute winner.
