After back-to-back years of bouncing out in the fourth round, Columbus Crew SC are hoping to reverse that trend when they open their 2019 U.S. Open Cup run against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL Championship Tuesday night at MAPFRE Stadium.

This is the first-ever meeting between the teams.

Columbus Crew SC

Crew SC enter their second competition of the season having won just one of their last 10 league contests, and are winless in their last four following a 2-2 draw against New York City FC at home on June 1.

In that match, Gyasi Zardes, who is with the US men's national team ahead of the Concacaf Gold Cup, and Pedro Santos staked the hosts leads in each half. But Crew SC twice conceded equalizers.

A year ago, Columbus, who won the Open Cup in 2002, played the Chicago Fire to a wild 2-2 draw before falling 10-9 in a penalty shootout in the fourth round.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds

The Riverhounds entered the competition in the second round, defeating USL-2 side Dayton Dutch Lions, 3-0, at Highmark Stadium.

Neco Brett opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 57th minute. The Jamaican added a second goal 12 minutes later on an assist from Anthony Velarde, who iced the match in the second minute of second-half stoppage time.

Pittsburgh then knocked off fellow USL Championship squad Indy Eleven, 1-0, in the third round on a goal by Jamaican Kenardo Forbes five minutes from full time.
