The Colorado Rapids search for a first U.S. Open Cup title continues Wednesday night when they meet New Mexico United of the USL Championship at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

The Rapids, who reached the 1999 final, lost to Nashville SC in the fourth round a year ago. This is the first meeting between the Rapids and New Mexico United, a club founded in 2018.

Colorado Rapids

Unlike last year, the Rapids enter the U.S. Open Cup on their best form of the season, extending an unbeaten streak to five matches following a 1-0 win over Minnesota United FC at home Saturday night. Kei Kamara scored the lone goal, rising up to latch onto Jack Price's corner kick and powering his header past Vito Mannone.

The Rapids' deepest run in the competition came in 1999 where they reached the final where they lost to the Rochester Raging Rhinos, 2-0.

New Mexico United

New Mexico United have been the road warriors in their inaugural appearance in the U.S. Open Cup. They advanced out of the second round via a penalty-kick shootout after playing host and fellow USL Championship side Phoenix Rising FC, 2-2.

In the third round, New Mexico United traveled to Colorado Springs and needed extratime to knock off Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, also of the USL Championship, 2-1. Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Christopher Wehan leveled three minutes from full time and Kevaughn Frater netted what proved to be the decisive 95th-minute penalty kick.
