Portland Timbers' Brian Fernandez continues bright start in MLS with brace

Brian Fernandez was brought in to score goals for the Portland Timbers, and two games into his MLS career, he's doing just that.

After coming off the bench and scoring the equalizer in his debut for Portland on May 15, the Argentine continued his stellar start to his MLS tenure, and raised the ante to boot, as he scored a first-half brace to give the Timbers a 2-0 lead over the Philadelphia Union at Talen Energy Stadium on Saturday.

Three goals in two games and counting after his transfer earlier this month from Liga MX side Necaxa...so far so good for the highly-touted Timbers newcomer.

He celebrated one of his goals in the 3-1 win by revealing a Necaxa-themed shin pad.

The reason for highlighting his old team?

He explained that he decided to wear that for Pachuca midfielder Victor Davila, who he used to play with at Nexaca and with whom he and his family have a “very, very special relationship.”

“Before the game, I saw the shinguard and said to myself, ‘Well, should I use it? You know what, I’m going to use it and I’m going to score with it tonight,’” he said postgame through a translator. “And thankfully I was able to score — and it’s very special to me because I’m honoring my friendship with him.”
