Goal of the Matchday

Rapids' Andre Shinyashiki dominates 2019's first AT&T Goal of the Week vote

New year, new season, new face for the first edition of the MLS AT&T Goal of the Week – if you can even make out his face amidst all that snow.

Colorado Rapids rookie Andre Shinyashiki is the unexpected captain of GOTW’s maiden voyage in 2019, stunning a field packed with strong efforts and more famous names with a dominating cruise to victory in the polls.

The Sao Paulo native and transplanted Denverite was the hero of Colorado’s frigid 3-3 draw with the Portland Timbers on opening day, stealing in at the back post to fire home the injury-time equalizer on his MLS debut, an occasion which set a new MLS record for coldest-ever match temperatures.

Supersub Shinyashiki commanded a whopping 69 percent of the vote. Leonardo Bertone's breathtaking volley for FC Cincinnati at Seattle, the expansion side's inaugural MLS goal, finished a distant second with 19 percent, followed by Sounders hero Jordan Morris (9 percent), Montreal Impact star Ignacio Piatti (3 percent) and NYCFC's Ebenezer Ofori (1 percent).
