Major League Soccer announced on Thursday that Commissioner Don Garber’s contract has been extended through the 2023 season, with a new five-year agreement recently approved by the MLS Board of Governors. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Garber, 61, has presided over MLS’s dramatic growth and consolidation since taking the post in 1999, with the league expanding from 12 to 27 clubs, adding 25 new owners and developing 19 soccer stadiums across the United States and Canada.

Garber has received multiple accolades for his work, including perennial placement on Sports Business Daily's "50 Most Influential People in Sports Business" list and induction into the National Soccer Hall of Fame last year.

He also serves on U.S. Soccer’s board of directors and was appointed the vice-chairman of the World Leagues Forum last fall.
