The New York Red Bulls completed a swoop for a young attacking talent from Denmark on Tuesday morning, announcing the transfer of 18-year-old forward Mathias Jorgensen from Odense Boldklub.

RBNY have acquired the Danish youth international using Targeted Allocation Money, and signed him to a multiyear MLS contract; he will be added to the roster pending receipt of his ITC and P-1 visa. Jorgensen becomes New York’s youngest rostered first-team player in 2019. While details of the transfer and contract were not officially disclosed by the club, media outlets in Denmark reported that a transfer fee of around $2.5 million was involved.

“We are pleased to welcome Mathias to our club,” said Red Bulls sporting director Denis Hamlett in a statement. “He is a talented young player who fits into our philosophy and playing style. Throughout the scouting, interviewing, and signing process we became more and more confident in Mathias’ character, his team-first attitude, and his competitive drive. His decision to join our club as a young European player speaks volumes about the New York Red Bulls and Major League Soccer.”

Jorgensen debuted for Odense Boldklub’s first team at age 17 and has appeared in 18 matches across all competitions, scoring three goals in 572 minutes. He’d previously played in 25 matches for OB’s Under-19 side, scoring 28 times in 2,112 minutes played, and notched nine goals in nine games for the club’s reserve team.

“We are really excited to have added Mathias to our team. He fits the profile of a Red Bull player and person that we look for,” said RBNY head coach Chris Armas. “As a striker, Mathias gives us another dynamic option up the field with his speed, clever movements, and willingness to run behind defenses.  In addition to his talent though, we love his attitude, humbleness, and his desire to work for the team.”
