TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing

Three days after he was waived by Atlanta United, Chris McCann has found a new home.

The 31-year-old was claimed off waivers by D.C. United on Tuesday night, as the Irishman moves up the Eastern seaboard to join the Black and Red. McCann spent the previous two seasons with the Five Stripes, becoming an MLS Cup champion in 2018.

“We are excited to acquire Chris and add real quality, versatility and experience to our group," said United GM and VP of soccer operations Dave Kasper in a statement. "He has played with Wigan and Burnley in the top tiers of English soccer, and he won an MLS Cup with Atlanta last year. We look forward to having Chris join us tomorrow for our second pre-season camp in Clearwater."

Over two seasons with Atlanta, McCann made a total of 45 appearances and contributed a goal and an assist. He made two substitute appearances in the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs, including coming on late in MLS Cup. McCann mostly featured at left wingback in 2018 but can also feature as a center back in a back three, at left back or in central midfield.

Before joining Atlanta, McCann spent three seasons with Wigan Athletic in the English Championship and League One after starting his career with Burnley, where he played eight seasons mostly in the Championship.
