New York City FC announced on Saturday they have signed midfielder Juan Pablo Torres to a multi-year contract after being transferred from KSC Lokeren.

The 19-year-old is a native of Lilburn, Georgia and made two appearances for the Belgian top-flight club after signing his first professional deal in 2017. The midfielder is also a US youth international, having most recently captained the US U-20 national team as they won the 2018 Concacaf U-20 Championship.

“In Juan Pablo we’re adding a dynamic midfielder who is extremely versatile and comes to us at an exciting time in his career," NYCFC sporting director Claudio Reyna said in a team statement. "He’s had tremendous success in the U.S. youth national team setup and with the U-20 World Cup ahead of him, he’s ready to come in and prove himself. It’s important for our club to continue to develop and sign young, American players with an eye towards the future.

“We want to pursue players who are highly adaptable and can play multiple positions and Juan Pablo fits this mold. He has a very high soccer IQ and understands the style and tactical approach in which we play. He’ll be an excellent cultural fit within our locker room and overall is an exciting addition here at NYCFC.”

Torres is the third US youth international to sign with NYCFC this offseason, joining Keaton Parks and Justin Haak.
