Vancouver Whitecaps sign Spanish midfielder Jon Erice

The Vancouver Whitecaps have signed Spanish midfielder Jon Erice from La Liga 2 side Albacete Balompie with the use of Targeted Allocation Money, the club announced Tuesday.

Erice, 32, has made more than 300 appearances across the top three professional divisions in Spain and made 56 appearances for Albacete after joining in 2017. He played the most games in his career for Real Oviedo.

“Jon brings a wealth of experience to our club and has played consistently in highly competitive environments,” Whitecaps head coach Marc Dos Santos said in a media release. “He has a strong understanding of the demands we require in the defensive midfielder position. He’s an excellent distributor of the ball, technical, tenacious, and another important piece as we continue to build our roster.”

Erice made 18 starts for Albacete this season and was entering the final six months of his contract; he departs with the club in fourth place in the second division, just four points adrift from the top of the table.
