Update Jan. 23: FC Cincinnati have completed the signing of American holding midfielder Caleb Stanko from Bundesliga side Freiburg for an undisclosed transfer fee, reported by Goal's Ives Galarcep to be in the "low six figures" range.

Jan. 22: FC Cincinnati may have hit a snag in their bid for a No. 10, but they appear to have a No. 6 in their sights.

Both The Athletic's Kristian Dyer and Goal.com's Ives Galarcep are reporting the expansion side is close to a deal for American holding midfielder Caleb Stanko, who has been with Bundesliga side SC Freiburg's setup for most of the past decade.

Dyer writes that Targeted Allocation Money would be used to sign the 25-year-old, who has seen little first-team action for Freiburg but did play regularly during a loan year FC Vaduz in the Swiss Super League two seasons ago.

Stanko has also played center back, as well as box-to-box and right midfield positions, which should give Cincy coach Alan Koch some versatility as he continues building his first MLS squad. He has one cap for the US national team, coming on as a sub in a World Cup qualifier against Trinidad and Tobago in 2016.

As Dyer and Galarcep note, his addition would take a bit of the sting out of the breakdown of talks between the club and Chilean playmaker Matias Fernandez.
