Report: Mexico's Club America eye New York Red Bulls playmaker Kaku Gamarra

Here's the latest on the rumors linking Kaku to Club América:

Plenty of updates out of the Spanish-language press on Thursday regarding Club América's pursuit of Kaku.

The Red Bulls have been featuring the player participating in training in Preseason presented by AdvoCare.

But América head coach Miguel Herrera was quoted by ESPN as saying his team would not overpay for the player simply because of the club's reputation.

"We have an idea of what a player costs and we offer it and we don't have to go crazy because they [another club] want to be wise guys," Herrera said. "We have a line [of thinking] and we're following it."

With the teams apparently still at an impasse in negotiations, Kaku himself said he would like to move on, calling the Red Bulls' asking price "not reasonable."

"We want them to earn money and recover what they invested so that we are all happy, but I think the price is not reasonable, " Kaku said in an interview with ESPN Deportes on Thursday.

One of the biggest, richest clubs in Mexico has turned its gaze to prized New York Red Bulls playmaker Alejandro Romero Gamarra, better known as Kaku, according to a new report from ESPN Mexico.

However, in a follow-up report from the same outlet, it appears the Red Bulls have rejected an initial offer of just under $9 million, though Kaku is open to the potential move.

Mexico City giants Club América recently sold talented young winger Diego Lainez to La Liga club Real Betis for a reported $14 million transfer fee, and charismatic manager Miguel “Piojo” Herrera has apparently identified Kaku as a suitable replacement for Las Aguilas.

Gamarra arrived at RBNY from Argentina’s Huracan a little under a year ago after a long-running transfer saga, and the left-footed Argentinean showed his value in league action – scoring six goals and 14 assists in 30 appearances (29 starts) for the Supporters’ Shield-winning Red Bulls – and in Concacaf Champions League, where he contributed to his team’s run to the tournament’s semifinals.

América won the 2018 Apertura, the first half of the current Liga MX season, and kicked off their Clausura campaign earlier this month.
