The Houston Dynamo signed veteran midfielder Tommy McNamara, the club announced Friday.

The 27-year-old fan favorite spent the last four years with New York City FC, but was selected by the Dynamo in the Stage 2 of the MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec. 20.

ā€œTommy joins our club in the prime of his career with a strong desire to contribute to the success of the Houston Dynamo,ā€ Dynamo senior vice president and general manager Matt Jordan said in a release. ā€œHis strong mentality, high soccer IQ, and ability to play a variety of positions in the attacking third will strengthen our group as we prepare for a busy 2019.ā€

McNamara, who started his MLS career with Chivas USA, scored 13 goals and had 14 assists with NYCFC. The West Nyack, New York native was the last remaining original members of the 2015 expansion side before his option was declined. He appeared in just 10 games last year, starting four, and had three assists in 370 minutes.

ā€œI had the opportunity to select Tommy in the draft in 2014 because he was a very smart and talented player,ā€ Dynamo coach Wilmer Cabrera said. ā€œHe is even more mature now and we believe he can make a positive impact with the Dynamo. We also think his professionalism and dedication will be a great addition to our locker room.ā€
