TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing

Orlando City SC’s offseason transformation continues with the signing of center back Alex De John to a one-year contract, the club announced Thursday.

The 27-year-old New Jersey native has spent the last six years playing in Norway, Sweden and Finland.

“Alex is an experienced defender who adds needed depth to our backline. He is a natural leader with solid experience in Europe and the US,” Orlando City SC EVP of Soccer Operations Luiz Muzzi said in a statement. “We are thrilled to make this key signing at center back ahead of preseason, and know Alex will be a strong contributor to the game both in play and in aiding the development of young players we are bringing to the team.”

De John spent the last two years at Dalkurd FF – who featured in the top-flight Allsvenskan in 2018 – after previously playing for Start, TPS and Ekenäs in Finland.

The 6-foot De John played college soccer for Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he played all four years in addition to spending time with the Central Jersey Spartans of the USL Premier Development League (now USL League Two).
