Sporting KC acquire forward Erik Hurtado from Vancouver Whitecaps FC

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Trade

Sporting Kansas City were busy on Friday, as in addition to signing Rodney Wallace earlier in the day they announced the acquisition of forward Erik Hurtado in a trade with Vancouver Whitecaps FC, in exchange for Sporting's natural second-round pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft and natural first-round pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft.

Hurtado, 28, had spent his entire MLS career to date with Vancouver, after being drafted by the Whitecaps in 2013. In six seasons, he made 105 appearances, scoring 12 goals and 10 assists in regular season play, while coming off the bench the majority of the time. He also played a role in Vancouver's 2015 Canadian Championship triumph, and has experience playing in Concacaf Champions League. Hurtado also spent part of 2015 on loan at Norwegian club Mjondalen.

“We are thankful to Erik for his contributions on and off the pitch over his six seasons in Vancouver, we wish him all the best in his next chapter in Kansas City,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Marc Dos Santos in a statement. “This is a move that benefits both Erik and the club as we continue to make changes to our roster for the short, medium, and long term.”

The Oregon native appears likely to take over the role played in 2018 by Khiry Shelton, who reportedly will be seeking to continue his career outside MLS.
