Just as multiple media reports have indicated over the past few months, Gregg Berhalter remains the leading contender to be named the next head coach of the U.S. men’s national team.
That’s according to FOX and Sports Illustrated journalist Grant Wahl, who reported during the pregame show ahead of Tuesday’s friendly vs. Colombia that multiple sources have told him that the Columbus Crew SC manager is the odds-on choice of USMNT general manager Earnie Stewart, who hopes to announce the new coaching hire by the start of November.
Wahl also mentioned former New York Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch, U.S. U-20 national team coach Tab Ramos, Atlanta United boss Tata Martino and Sporting KC manager and technical director Peter Vermes as USMNT candidates, while describing the various factors working against each one.
Wahl added that Berhalter may also have a choice to make, with the LA Galaxy eyeing him as their potential next permanent coach. The Galaxy parted ways with Sigi Schmid a few weeks ago and are presently being led on an interim basis by Dom Kinnear.
U.S. Soccer has maintained a policy of not commenting on individual candidates during the USMNT coaching search and on Tuesday a spokesperson reiterated that approach.
