They lost their day’s match, a 3-0 setback at Montreal, but the New York Red Bulls got some good news on Saturday nonetheless.

RBNY became the first team to clinch a berth in the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs, thanks to New Englanddrawing 1-1 with the Portland Timbers at Gillette Stadium. It’s the club’s ninth consecutive qualification for the postseason.

The Red Bulls remain in first place in both the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield standings despite the Impact’s victory at Stade Saputo. However, Atlanta United can regain the lead in the overall league table with a victory over D.C. United on Sunday (7:30 pm ET | FS1 — Full TV & streaming info), and the Five Stripes are maintaining a faster clip in terms of average points per game and will still hold a game in hand on RBNY after this weekend.

The Red Bulls' next goal will be to qualify as a top two seed in the East, which would ensure them a berth into the Conference Semifinals.
