Sweden, Gustav Svensson advance to quarterfinals with win over Switzerland

Gustav Svensson - Sweden - Vs. Switzerland

Gustav Svensson's World Cup isn't over yet. The Seattle Sounders midfielder helped lead Sweden to the quarterfinals on Tuesday, beating Switzerland 1-0 in Saint Petersburg.

The win helps Sweden reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1994. It is their sixth appearance in the quarterfinals all-time.

Svensson went the full 90 minutes for his home nation in his first start of the tournament. He previously appeared as a substitute in Sweden's wins against South Korea and Mexico. The lone goal of the match came from Emil Forsberg in the 66th minute, when his shot from outside of the box took a significant deflection to get past Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Sweden will now face either Colombia or England on Saturday in Samara with a chance at advancing to the semifinals. Svensson may return to the bench for the quarterfinal as Sebastian Larsson will be returning from suspension.
