From Dulles to the Capitol Dome: How Washington welcomed Wayne

After months of increasingly credible links between English superstar Wayne Rooney and D.C. United, the former Manchester United and Everton attacker landed at Dulles Airport to a raucous welcome Thursday, just hours after his signing as a Designated Player was officially announced.

Several hundred fans awaited Rooney at Dulles' main terminal as he arrived to join his new club.

Among them were longtime TV voice of D.C. United Dave Johnson, who caught up with some excited young supporters who made their feelings on the move known.

Meanwhile, the folks at the British Embassy in downtown D.C. sensed something was different as they arrived at work early this morning.

Even D.C. congressional rep Eleanor Holmes Norton took notice.

After finally getting beyond the airport crowd, Rooney made a predictable first stop in his new city: a local beer garden to check out England's World Cup Group G finale against Belguim.
