Real Salt Lake have a big decision to make regarding the future of general manager Craig Waibel.
Waibel is out of contract at the end of the year, sources have confirmed to MLSsoccer.com. The sources added that RSL and Waibel have not yet begun negotiating a new deal.
A longtime MLS defender, Waibel joined Real Salt Lake ahead of the 2014 season as an assistant coach. He moved from the bench to the front office that December when the club named him technical director just one day after news broke that former GM Garth Lagerwey was leaving RSL for the Seattle Sounders.
RSL finished ninth in the Western Conference in 2015, rebounded to make the playoffs as the sixth seed in 2016 and, after a miserable start that led to the dismissal of former head coach Jeff Cassar, missed the 2017 postseason by one point following a red-hot second half.
Since Waibel was hired, RSL have signed attacking difference-makers Albert Rusnak and Jefferson Savarino and have seen Homegrown players Justen Glad, Danny Acosta and Brooks Lennon emerge as capable MLS defenders. They have struggled in their search for a consistent striker, however – they shipped off Yura Movsisyan this spring after a turbulent two years and have yet to see offseason addition Alfredo Ortuño make an impact. Homegrown rookie Corey Baird is the team's leading scorer this season, with four goals in 900 minutes (0.4 goals per 90).
RSL are currently in a three-way tie for fourth in the West with Portland and Vancouver, two points ahead of seventh-place Houston. They play at Columbus on Saturday.
