Grass pitch laid down at DC United's new home Audi Field

Grass installation at Audi Field - DC United

D.C. United's countdown to their long-awaited new home crossed another big milestone on Wednesday, as the grass playing surface was installed at Audi Field.

The intimate downtown venue along D.C.'s Southwest waterfront is scheduled to debut on July 14 with a match vs. the Vancouver Whitecaps, and laying down the pitch provides a tangible reminder of how closely that occasion is looming.

United fans quickly took to social media to express their excitement:

D.C. have a bye this week before hosting North Carolina FC in a US Open Cup match at the Maryland SoccerPlex next week and visiting the Seattle Sounders in league play on June 9.

That trip to Cascadia is one of four more road matches before the Black-and-Red finally get to move into Audi Field, the successor to RFK Stadium, their home since the inaugural season of MLS in 1996. You can view the progress on Audi Field in real time via a construction cam on the venue's website.
