The Houston Dynamo bolstered their defense before the close of the Primary Transfer Window, announcing on Thursday they have acquired defender Adam Lundqvist on a transfer from IF Elfsborg using Targeted Allocation Money.
Lundqvist, 24, is a left back who had been with Elfsborg in the Swedish Allsvenskan since 2011, winning the league title in 2012 and the Swedish Cup in 2013-14. All told, he played 109 games for the club, after playing in their academy as a youth. Lundqvist also has experience in Europe, having played in three separate Europa League campaigns with Elfsborg.
“Adam is a young and talented defender who has already played over 100 first division matches at just 24 years old and has represented his country at important international competitions,” said Dynamo senior vice president and general manager Matt Jordan in a team statement. “We are confident that he has the quality as a player and the mentality as a professional to grow and develop with our club.”
A Swedish international, Lundqvist has extensive experience at the youth levels and played for his country at the 2016 Rio Olympics. He has two senior national team caps to date.
“We are excited to have Adam join the Dynamo because he is very promising left back. Even though he is young, he has already represented Sweden in the Olympics, and he was a starter for IF Elfsborg,” said Dynamo head coach Wilmer Cabrera. “He is excited to come and accept the new challenge of playing for the Houston Dynamo and competing in MLS. Plus, he is excited to learn from DaMarcus Beasley, who has played in four World Cups and has a lot of experience, so that will make for a good opportunity for him.”
