TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Report
Could one of the top American strikers be headed to his home country?
Wood has three years left on his contract with Hamburg but the Bundesliga club is currently in 17th place in the 18-team league and in danger of being relegated for the first time ever. On top of those relegation troubles, Wood is also struggling to find playing time and has scored just once this season.
He had far more success in Germany last year with nine goals across all competitions after scoring 17 times for second-tier Union Berlin in 2015-16.
Having risen to near the top of the US national team striker depth chart, the Hawaii native has scored 11 goals for the USMNT since debuting in 2013, including five in the most recent World Cup qualifying cycle.
Wood is not on the league’s player allocation list, and Goff reports that at least one MLS club has placed a discovery claim on the 25-year-old striker, who would likely command a high salary as well as a hefty transfer fee.
