Portland Timbers defender Alvas Powell named Alcatel MLS Player of the Week

Alvas Powell — Portland Timbers — Player of the Week, Week 7

After a memorable offensive outburst, Portland Timbers defender Alvas Powell was voted the Alcatel MLS Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 7.

From his right back position, Powell electrified the Providence Park crowd in the Timbers home opener, snagging an early goal and assist in Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Minnesota United FC.

The Jamaican international opened the scoring with a magnificent run up the field, weaving around multiple defenders before unleashing a rocket to beat goalkeeper Matt Lampson to the near post in the 20th minute.

Just three minutes later, a perfectly placed cross set up a Diego Valeri goal to give Portland a 2-0 lead. Powell's defense helped the Timbers (1-3-2) hold onto the lead and secure their first victory of the season.

Powell — who ranks in the top five among MLS defenders with nine successful dribbles completed — will look to continue to add an offensive punch when the Timbers host Eastern Conference powerhouse New York City FC on Sunday (6 pm ET | FS1 — full TV & streaming info).

The Alcatel MLS Player of the Week is chosen each week of the regular season by members of the North American Soccer Reporters. The organization includes print, television, radio and online journalists who cover domestic men's soccer in the United States and Canada.
