Goal of the Matchday

Atlanta's Almiron wins Week 2 AT&T Goal of the Week with upper-90 blast

How good was Miguel Almiron’s top-shelf missile?

On Sunday it banked Atlanta United’s first win of the season, and by Thursday it won top spot in the AT&T MLS Goal of the Week poll for Week 2.

The Paraguayan playmaker’s strike, the second in ATLUTD’s three-goal outburst in a 3-1 home victory over D.C. United in front of an MLS single-game record crowd of 72,035, cruised to this week’s honors. The left-footed blast racked up 55 percent of the vote, more than twice the total of the second-place finisher, Sporting Kansas City’s Felipe Gutierrez, which garnered 19 percent.

Further back, Montreal’s Raheem Edwards finished third with 17 percent for his first-time volley golazo at Columbus, Chicago's Aleksandar Katai came in fourth (6 percent) and Ignatio Piatti ran fifth (3 percent) with the second of the Impact's two goals.

Almiron and Atlanta return to action on Saturday when the Vancouver Whitecaps visit Mercedes-Benz Stadium (7:30 pm ET | MLS LIVE in US, TSN2 in Canada).
