DC United sign USL scoring king Dane Kelly

D.C. United have added a striker to their roster for the 2018 season, announcing on Friday the signing of defending USL MVP Dane Kelly via MLS's Discovery Process.

Kelly, 27, is the all-time leading scorer in the USL, where he played 2011-17, scoring 56 goals in 138 USL appearances for Charleston Battery, Swope Park Rangers and Reno 1868 FC. Last season, while with the expansion Reno side, Kelly won the USL Golden Boot with 18 goals and was voted league MVP.

The forward, who started his pro career in his native country at Jamaican club Tivoli Gardens in 2010, is also a Jamaican international, having made two appearances and scored one goal since getting his first call-up last year.

“Dane has an impressive goalscoring record in the USL and is getting minutes with the Jamaican national team,” Dave Kasper, United general manager said in a team statement. “He will provide us with more attacking options and we are excited to welcome him to the club.”

D.C. United face Atlanta United in 2018 MLS regular season play on Sunday (3 pm ET | ESPN; MLS LIVE on DAZN).
