The New York Red Bulls added another academy product to their first-team roster on Wednesday, when they announced that they signed defender Kevin Politz to a Homegrown deal.

Politz, 21, joins the Red Bulls after four years at Wake Forest University. The center back was named an All-American and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2017, anchoring a backline that led the ACC with 10 shutouts and a 0.56 goals-against average and helping the Demon Deacons to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.

Politz played for the Red Bulls’ U-23 PDL team each of the last two summers.

“We are pleased to add Kevin to our club after a successful college career,” Red Bulls sporting director Denis Hamlett said in a statement released by the club. “Kevin has earned this opportunity with his play at Wake Forest and with our Under-23 team the last two summers. He has qualities that we like and look for in center backs, and we look forward to his continued development in our environment.”

A United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American with a 3.94 GPA while majoring in mathematical business, Politz won US Soccer Development Academy national championships with the Red Bulls in 2012 and 2013. He’s represented the US at the youth international level.

“We are really excited to add on another quality Homegrown player to our squad,” said New York head coach Jesse Marsch said. “Kevin has had a great career at Wake Forest both on and off the field, and we are excited for him to continue his career with us.”
