Report: FC Dallas eyeing veteran River Plate center back Jonatan Maidana

Jonatan Maidana - River Plate

A few years ago FC Dallas acquired one of their most important players, playmaker Mauro Diaz, from River Plate. Now it seems that the North Texans may be perusing another impact signing from the Argentinean giants.

Multiple Latin American outlets are reporting that FCD are exploring a move for River Plate center back Jonatan Maidana, a powerful veteran and fan favorite with more than 200 appearances over seven years with Los Millionarios.

The defender would theoretically provide a game-ready replacement for and possibly even an upgrade on Walker Zimmerman, who departed Toyota Stadium for LAFC via a trade earlier this offseason.

Maidana, 32, has won an impressive list of trophies over his career, which also includes stints with Metalist Kharkiv in Ukraine, Banfield and River's hated crosstown rivals Boca Juniors. His teams have won two Copa Sudamericana titles, two Copa Libertadores trophies and a range of domestic honors, the most recent coming this month as River – who are coached by onetime D.C. United Designated Player Marcelo Gallardo – won the Copa Argentina.

Mercado River Plate claims that Dallas have already lodged a bid for Maidana and that a deal could be completed “in the coming days.”
