D.C. United signed Costa Rican international midfielder Ulises Segura from Costa Rican club Saprissa on Thursday, the club announced. D.C. sent NYCFC $50,000 in General Allocation Money in exchange for the right to sign Segura.

Segura, 24, joins D.C. after spending the last three years with Saprissa. He was a regular throughout his time with the club, appearing in 115 league matches and tallying 14 goals for the San JosĆ©-based side. He appeared in 26 matches in the clubā€™s recently-completed Apertura campaign, scoring three goals and registering two assists.

Capable of playing as a central midfielder or on the right wing, Segura has six career caps for the Costa Rican national team. He was on the countryā€™s roster for the 2017 Gold Cup, making two appearances in the tournament, and made the bench for a pair of World Cup qualifiers in March.

ā€œUlises is an exciting Costa Rican national team player with the tools to add a powerful dynamic to our midfield,ā€ said D.C. GM Dave Kasper in a team statement. ā€œHeā€™s a box-to-box midfielder who can also play out wide and his performances with the Ticos and Saprissa, one of the best clubs in CONCACAF, have shown that he is on track towards becoming an elite professional. We are excited for his future with the club.ā€
