Real Salt Lake sign Homegrown defender Aaron Herrera, Monarchs' Taylor Peay

TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing

Real Salt Lake have not been shy about tapping into their pipeline of talented youngsters, and that trend does not look like it will stop any time soon.

RSL announced on Friday that they have signed academy product and US Under-20 men's national team defender Aaron Herrera. The 20-year-old Herrera joins Salt Lake after three seasons with the University of New Mexico, and is the 14th Homegrown Player signed to RSL's roster.

"Aaron is another example of a player who developed under Martin Vasquez and Freddy Juarez at our Academy and put in the work to become a professional," said RSL general manager Craig Waibel in a statement released by the club. "There are so many different paths those players have taken, but it just goes further to emphasize that there are so many different ways to successfully develop talents in this country.

"We are extremely proud of Aaron for his accomplishments thus far and are excited to have him continue his career at the pro level with Real Salt Lake."

The club also announced the signing of defender and Salt Lake native Taylor Peay after he helped its USL affiliate, Real Monarchs SLC, win the 2017 regular season championship shield. RSL acquired the MLS right of first refusal for Peay in a trade with the Portland Timbers, sending a third round pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft in exchange for the 26-year-old.
