D.C. United made the first move of MLS' Sunday trade window, announcing the acquisition of defender Frederic Brillant from New York City FC. In return, NYCFC will receive $75,000 in General Allocation Money as well as a 2018 international roster slot.

Brillant, 32, recently completed his second season with NYCFC and has signed new two-year deal with D.C. after having his option declined by New York. Over the course of his stint with NYCFC, the Frenchman made 54 regular-season appearances and four starts across the team's two playoff campaigns.

"One of our top priorities this offseason was acquiring an experienced central defender and we are very pleased to complete this transfer," Dave Kasper, United general manager, said in a team statement. "Frederic is a smart, athletic defender who is a very good passer. His size, speed and presence will strengthen our backline next season and we are excited to welcome him to D.C."

Prior to his time in MLS, Brillant spent five seasons in the Belgian First Division. He made 111 appearances and scored 12 goals in two stints with Belgian side Oostende (2011-2012, 2013-2016) and was with Beerschot AC between 2012-2013.
