Atlanta United FC have reportedly agreed to a deal with Argentine defender Franco Escobar.

Buenos Aires-based journalist Cesar Luis Merlo reported on Monday that Atlanta have signed the 22-year-old center back from Newell’s Old Boys. Atlanta reportedly bought 80 percent of Escobar’s rights from Newell’s; his contract is reportedly for three years with options for two additional seasons.

Escobar, who was reported to be close to joining Atlanta in late October, has spent his entire professional career with Newell’s. Capable of playing at center back or right back, he made 12 appearances in the 2016-17 Argentine Primera season. He’s played in just one match in the current campaign.

Atlanta head coach Tata Martino spent the bulk of his playing career at Newell’s and coached the Argentine club in 2012 and 2013.
