Best Of: Milestones hit and records broken in during the 2017 MLS season

Diego Valeri - Portland Timbers - Best Of

2017 was a historic season in MLS for more reasons than one.

We saw the best regular season team in MLS history, multiple goal records and some movement on some all-time lists. Let's take a look at some of those milestones and benchmarks.

TFC's incredible season

Toronto FC are set to play Columbus Crew SC in the Eastern Conference Championship, but they already broke an important record this season. Their 69 points were the most in MLS history, breaking a 19-year-old record set by the LA Galaxy

The Maestro of Portland

Diego Valeri is one of five finalists for the Landon Donovan MVP Award, and for good reason. The Portland Timbers star broke the record for goals scored in consecutive matches, eventually scoring in nine straight to best the previous record of seven.

Valeri also became the second player to ever record 20 goals and 10 assists in a season. The only other player to accomplish the feat was Sebastian Giovinco in 2015.

Wondo moves up the charts

Chris Wondolowski has been incredibly consistent since 2010, scoring at least 11 goals in every season. The kind of consistency has allowed him to move up the MLS all-time goal charts, and in 2017 he moved past Jamie Moreno and into a tie for second place with Jeff Cunningham on 134 goals.

Sounders' historic comeback

We were just coming out of the Gold Cup break, even as the US national team were beating El Salvador in the quarterfinals, but the Seattle Sounders made some noise on a busy Wednesday night. They gave up three goals at CenturyLink Field within the first 50 minutes to D.C. United, but all was not lost. An incredible surge saw them score four goals in 27 minutes to become the first team in MLS history to ever come back and win from a three-goal deficit.

Most 10+ goalscorers

All in all, 2017 was a prolific year for offense that saw a league record 30 players score at least 10 league goals.

Most hat tricks ever

One last casualty was the record for most hat tricks recorded in a single season broken. The feat was accomplished on 15 different occasions.
