Atlanta United break attendance records, paces MLS to single-season mark

Take a bow, Atlanta United.

Two attendance records were broken by the expansion side on Sunday in their regular-season finale, a 2-2 home draw, vs. Toronto FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium:

  1. The single-game attendance record
The crowd of 71,824 fans that turned out for the match surpassed the previous standalone single-game high of 70,245, which ATL UTD had previously established against Orlando City on September 16.
  2. The single-season attendance average
Atlanta United also raised their season average to an unprecedented 48,200, topping Seattle Sounders' 2015 showing (44,247) and setting a new bar for American soccer, topping the New York Cosmos of 1978 (nearly 48,000).

Seattle, second this season at 43,666, finished with the fourth-highest all-time mark and stretched a league-record to 150 consecutive matches with at least 25,000 fans; Toronto FC is second at 29 and counting. Four clubs -- TFC, the Portland Timbers, New York Red Bulls and Chicago Fire -- each set a record (by average) for their current stadium.

Additionally, MLS finished 2017 with a league-wide season average attendance figure of 22,106, marking the first time the league finished above 22,000, drawing more than 8 million total fans, also for the first time. Thirty-five matches topped 40,000 fans, up from 11 in 2016.
