One result on Saturday night saw three Eastern Conference clubs mathematically clinch a spot in the Audi 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs.
By virtue of the New York Red Bulls’ 1-0 win over the Montreal Impact, the three frontrunners in the Eastern Conference — Toronto FC, New York Red Bulls and New York City FC — all booked their tickets to the postseason dance.
It’s the first-ever postseason berth in New York City FC history in only their second MLS season, and they have their rival Red Bulls to thank as RBNY also advance to the playoffs for the 17th time in 21 years. Meanwhile, Toronto make it for the second straight season after missing out in their first eight years of existence.
All three join Western Conference leading FC Dallas, who were the first MLS club this year to secure a playoff berth last weekend.
Five-time MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy were the only other team with a shot a making the postseason in Week 29, but dropped a 4-2 decision at home to the Seattle Sounders when only a win would have gotten them in.
