It couldn't have ended any other way.
On the day he played his final international match for the Republic of Ireland, LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane scored, in a 4-0 friendly win over Oman in Dublin on Wednesday.
Keane, already the world's leading international scorer among active male players, extended his record for one final day as he scored his 68th international goal in the match. He finishes level with German legend Gerd Muller for 14th place all-time in the history of men's international soccer.
Keane announced his retirement from Ireland last week, calling time on a remarkable 18-year run with his country. In addition to becoming Ireland's leading scorer and appearances record holder, he played in the 2002 World Cup, as well as the 2012 and 2016 European Championships.
The 36-year-old is in his sixth season with the Galaxy, having won three MLS Cups, one Supporters' Shield, MLS MVP and MLS Cup MVP honors, among other individual awards, in his time in MLS.
The Galaxy commemorated Keane's final game for his country by taking out a front-page advertisement congratulating the player in the Irish Times earlier this week:
